Existential Discussion: Searching for the Meaning of Life in the Face of Death and Existential Dilemmas
Ciputat, October 22, 2024 — The Faculty of Psychology UIN Jakarta held a very in-depth and thought-provoking discussion with the theme "Finding the Meaning of Life in Facing Death and Existential Dilemmas." Ernest Becker's classic work inspired the discussion of The Denial of Death, which discusses how humans face the fear of death and find meaning in life amid existential dilemmas.
It was led by the Vice Dean III for student affairs, alums, and cooperation with Mrs. Prof. Dr. Rena Latifa, M.Psi. Psychologist representing the Dean of the Faculty of Psychology UIN Jakarta appreciated the scientific discussions that are often carried out by DC (Discussion Community); in this discussion, dissected the work of Ernest Bekker, a cultural anthropologist, where anthropology is a science that intersects with psychology and research in the field of psychology often requires Anthropologist Scientific Perspective.
The event, which was held at the Zakiah Daradjat Theater, Faculty of Psychology UIN Jakarta, presented two main speakers: Wandi S. Brata, translator and Commissioner of PT. Gramedia Pustaka Utama shares insights into Becker's thoughts and how this work remains relevant in modern society. According to Wandi, the book The Denial of Death provides an in-depth understanding of how humans deny death to maintain their existence.
On the other hand, Dr. Ilmi Amalia, M.Psi, a lecturer at the Faculty of Psychology UIN Jakarta, highlighted from a psychological point of view, explaining how fear of death and the search for meaning in life impact mental health. "Death is a certainty, but how humans deal with it is a complex and personal process," he said.
Indra S. Hatami, a psychology student at UIN Jakarta, acted as a moderator, guided the discussion carefully, and asked critical questions that helped deepen the participants' understanding of the theme raised.
This discussion not only focused on theory alone but also invited participants to reflect on the meaning of life amid the uncertainty faced by humans, especially in the existential context, and how to deal with death.
The event, which took place at 13.00 WIB, is expected to provide a broader understanding of how humans can find the meaning and purpose of their lives amid limitations and mortality. This discussion also reminds us of the importance of deep reflection on existential questions that we often avoid but continue to overshadow our daily lives.
