Mastering Information Literacy and Grammarly Tools: Keys to Success in Academic Writing in the Digital Era
In today's fast-paced digital era, accessing, evaluating, and using information effectively is an essential skill, especially among academics. Information literacy helps students identify credible and relevant sources for research, while tools like Grammarly make the process of academic writing much more accessible. Grammarly checks grammar and spelling and offers suggestions to improve clarity and style, ensuring academic work is well-structured and error-free. Combining information literacy and Grammarly tools empowers students to produce high-quality and professional academic work.
September 19, 2024 – The Master's Program in Psychology at the Faculty of Psychology, UIN Jakarta, successfully held a workshop on information literacy and using Grammarly tools, attended by master's students and faculty members. The event was led by the Head of the Master's Program, Dr. Natris Idriyani, M.Si., Psychologist, and the Program Secretary, Dr. Layyinah, M.Psi., with support from psychology library staff Nenden Serena, S.IP, and Achmad Isyadea Fauzzan Putra, S.IP.
Septian Nurhakim, S.IP, the main speaker, shared insights on information literacy, offering guidance on the importance of this skill in academia, especially in searching for and managing valid and trustworthy information sources. He also covered using Grammarly tools in academic writing, a digital tool that helps ensure grammar and structure adhere to international standards.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Natris Idriyani emphasized the importance of the workshop in enhancing students' abilities to produce high-quality academic work. "Master's students are expected to find credible information and present it clearly, in a well-structured format, and following academic conventions. There is no excuse to say it is difficult or that it has not been taught," she said.
During the information literacy session, participants received in-depth explanations on accessing scientific journals, e-books, and other resources through UIN Jakarta's digital library. Septian Nurhakim explained, "With strong information literacy skills, students can be more critical in selecting relevant sources for their research."
In the session on using Grammarly, Septian demonstrated how this application can enhance English writing skills, ensuring students' work is free from grammar, spelling, and stylistic errors. "Grammarly can be a virtual assistant for students working on theses or academic articles. Besides checking for mistakes, it also offers suggestions to improve the quality of writing," added Septian.
The workshop was well-received by students, with many expressing that it was highly beneficial for their writing and research. "It is not just about finding information but also presenting it well—this is what I learned today," said one participant.
With the successful completion of this event, it is hoped that UIN Jakarta's psychology master's students will be better prepared and more competent in producing high-quality academic work, both in terms of content and language, enabling them to compete at national and international levels.
This workshop is part of the UIN Jakarta Master's Program in Psychology's ongoing efforts to support students in developing their competencies in the dynamic academic world.
