"Optimizing Mendeley and Zotero Through Reference Management Activities"
"Optimizing Mendeley and Zotero Through Reference Management Activities"

To kick off the odd semester, the Faculty of Psychology at UIN Jakarta held a reference management workshop on September 11, 2024, in the Main Meeting Room of the Faculty of Psychology. The event was led by Dr. Layyinah, M.Si., Secretary of the Master's Program in Psychology, accompanied by librarians Nenden Serena Hidayani, S.IP, and Achmad Isyadea Fauzzan Putra, S.IP, who provided hands-on training on library information literacy.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Layyinah highlighted several key points in reference management, including supporting valid and credible research, simplifying thesis or paper writing, aiding in organizing and managing sources, increasing efficiency and productivity, and facilitating academic collaboration. She emphasized the importance of optimizing or sharpening reference management tools.

The event continued with the main session on reference management, presented by two speakers, Dr. Lolytasari, S.Ag., M.Si., and Nurul Hayati, M.Hum.

Dr. Loly refreshed the participants' understanding of Mendeley by explaining its core features: "What is Mendeley? How does it work? Mendeley is a reference management software and academic social network used to manage references and research documents effectively," explained Dr. Loly.

The main functions of Mendeley include managing references, reading and annotating documents, citing references, storing references and documents, automatically creating citations and bibliographies, and collaborating in academic writing.

Mendeley features:

  • Mendeley Desktop: Manages references and documents offline and organizes references into folders and subfolders.
  • Mendeley Web: Allows access and management of references from various devices.
  • Mendeley Mobile: A mobile app that makes accessing references easier on the go.
  • Mendeley Cite: A plugin for Microsoft Word and LibreOffice that simplifies the addition of citations and automatically generates bibliographies.

The speaker then encouraged participants to practice using Mendeley Desktop, with the first steps being:

  1. Registration and installation: Steps to create a Mendeley account and download the software.
  2. Adding references: Importing references from databases or websites and manually adding references.
  3. Organization: Create folders to categorize references and add tags and notes for easier searching.

The speaker also explained how to correctly create citation footnotes and differentiate between body notes and footnotes.

Creating citations: Generating automatic citations and compiling bibliographies using various citation styles (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.).

Nurul explained that the primary difference between Zotero and Mendeley lies in the application itself, as both serve similar functions and purposes. "Zotero is a reference and bibliography management software that helps users collect, organize, and format research references and documents. It assists in reference management and storage, automatic citation and bibliography creation, and data synchronization across devices. It can be installed on various operating systems. Zotero is also open-source," she stated.

This session deepened the participants' knowledge of how Zotero can be optimized academically. As a popular application among researchers, Zotero aids in managing references and citations, automatically creating bibliographies, and synchronizing data across different sources.

The event was met with high enthusiasm from the participants, who found it beneficial to gain a deeper understanding of information literacy and reference management software. This knowledge is expected to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of their research and academic writing processes.

It is hoped that the participants can accurately cite references, compile bibliographies, and organize research literature more professionally.

Sincerely,

Psychology for a Better Life
