Prof. Drs. Drs. Achmad Syahid, M.Ag.: Fasting as a Means of Self-Embracing and Increasing Piety

Ciputat, March 4, 2025 - In a midday religious lecture held today at the prayer room of the Faculty of Psychology, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Prof. Dr. Drs. Achmad Syahid, M.Ag., emphasized the importance of fasting as a means of self-discipline and spiritual growth. Attended by members of the Faculty of Psychology community, the event explored how fasting is not only a religious obligation but also a method for character building and self-control.

In his lecture, Prof. Achmad Syahid affirmed that fasting is a spiritual exercise that trains patience, discipline, and control over desires. “Fasting is not merely about abstaining from food and drink, but also about managing emotions, guarding one's speech, and increasing acts of kindness. This is what makes fasting a tool for self-refinement,” he said.

He further explained that fasting teaches individuals to be more compassionate towards others. “When we fast, we experience hunger, just as our less fortunate brothers and sisters do. This fosters empathy and encourages us to give more generously,” he added.

Moreover, Prof. Achmad Syahid highlighted that fasting brings not only spiritual benefits but also physical and psychological ones. By refraining from eating and drinking, the body is given a chance to rest and naturally detoxify. Psychologically, fasting also helps individuals cultivate calmness and emotional balance.

The event concluded with warm handshakes among attendees, closing the sermon with a prayer that the fasting performed will be accepted by Allah SWT and bring blessings into everyone’s life.
